Maybe it was just my family growing up but I remember eating and liking Grape-Nuts as a hot cereal. Never heard of it? I don't think they even put the recipe on the box anymore. The only reason I thought to start eating it again was because I was sick of oatmeal. Take 1/3 cup of Grape-Nuts cereal. Cover with 1/2 cup milk, or in my case, almond milk. Add 1 tsp. butter or margerine and 2 tsp. brown sugar or honey. Microwave for 1-2 minutes, depending if you want it crunchy or not, and eat up. I ate it for breakfast yesterday and Maxine asked if I'd make it for her today because it smelled good. She ate the whole bowl. I haven't eaten it in years because let's face it, who still buys Grape-Nuts? Grape-Nuts are on the nutty side so it's easy to disguise the almond milk flavor. I've made Cream of Wheat more in the past 6 months than in my entire life for the same reason. Thank goodness for eggs! "You got love 'em! I am so glad you posted this! We bought a box a couple weeks ago as an alternative to oatmeal, and both of us thought it was disgusting. I'll have to try your recipe and give GrapeNuts another shot! (If not, you might be receiving a package in the mail. *wink*)
I totally ate/eat Grape Nuts hot-and I remember the "hot" recipe on the back. But I love all hot cereal just because I'm wierd like that...always have been. Probably won't change any time soon:)
I too love all hot cereal. I remember having it in our house when I was a kid... but it was MOM'S cereal, and us kids weren't allowed to touch it. Of course it didn't stop us from sneaking some from time to time.
I haven't purchased it as an adult though. I wonder why that is?
I also remember eating grape nuts hot. I'm actually one of the few who still buys the stuff. I love it with yogurt (no good for you right now, but you might want to try it later) and soy milk (hot or cold). mmmmmm....I think I need a snack...
Hey, this is Elisa (Cox) Edwards. I found your blog link on Rachel and Justins blog. I just wanted to say that I had never heard of "hot" grapenuts until I got married. That's they only way my husbands family ever made them. I'm now realizing he's not so crazy after all. Ha Ha.
Grape Nuts is an approved food on Dr Esseltyn's cardio diet. I started making hot Grape Nuts last night but substituted real Vermont maple syrup for the honey and I used water in stead of milk. I thought it was great.
