SpaceX launch...

The kids and I had been cleaning and organizing but took a break to watch a live SpaceX launch. It's the first time since 2011 that Americans have been launched into space on American soil. Previously, American astronauts have been hitching a ride on the Russian rockets to the international space station.

Since NASA and SpaceX have started launching Americans again, I feel like a trip to Florida in a few years to see an actual launch would be awesome!

Something unique about the new SpaceX rockets is that they have the capability to have the main boosters return to Earth and land without damaging themselves. It's really cool to watch the booster rockets return to Earth and navigate to the landing pads and return safely.

Camping Memorial Weekend by Fredonia, AZ...

We were supposed to be visiting Seattle, WA and Western Canada this weekend. However, Corona has put a damper on several things, including international travel. We decided to do something fun but keep it more local. Merril has been taking Japanese tourists to a hike called white pocket and buckskin gulch. He's wanted to take us and so we built a trip around these hikes. I've seen people post on Instagram about a tunnel called the belly of the dragon. It's just a tunnel that they built for water diversion under a road.

It looks cool in pictures.

Just to be clear, we did not carve these names. We just happened to find them next to each other.

Then we drove past Fredonia, made a left hand turn on a dirt road and drove for like 30 minutes. We got way out into the boonies to a campsite that Merril had already scoped out. It was secluded and pretty nice!

We went camping during a cold snap and the wind was blowing which made it 70s during the day but 30's a night. We drove out to white pocket, but all needed pants and jackets.

White pocket kind of reminded me of pulled taffy, red sandstone and white sandstone stripes pulled together. Maxine felt it look like you could see water patterns and then someone swirled the rock and then froze it.

We got there about an hour before sunset and I think we were the only people there without a really expensive camera and a tripod.

It took us about two and a half hours to drive on the dirt roads from white pocket to our campsite. Jack was driving the rhino. On the way out, the rhino had lots of kids in it. But on the way back, Jack just drove solo. He got far ahead of us in the dark because he could drive faster than the truck could. We got a little nervous when we couldn't see him. There were some turns that he needed to make on some dirt roads and Maxine and I were worried that he might get lost.

Everything turned out fine, he made all the right turns and we caught up with him, much to the relief of Maxine. We told him not to get so far ahead and we kept on going. We kept thinking the rhino would run out of gas but it kept on driving. After a while, Jack was too tired to drive the rhino. It was about 10:30 at night and cold. I switched with him and drove the rhino about 10 minutes until it ran out of gas. We were really close to the campsite so we towed it the rest of the way. We all fell into bed and it was cold.

The next day it warmed up to mid-70s again. Perfect for camping. It was Sunday and so we had sacrament meeting in the woods. It was a unique experience because Corona virus has allowed is to have the authority to administer the sacrament at home. It's been a blessing to have the priesthood in my house and bless the sacrament with permission from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Merril kind of wanted to drive out to the Grand Canyon after church. He explained it was going to be another two and a half hour drive each way, and didn't get a whole lot of support. So we just decided to hang out and have a chill camping day.

Merril brought this hammock, that I had completely forgotten that we owned. We set it up and the kids played on it all day, except for the time when Maxine tried to have a nap in it.

We were on BLM grazing land and while Merril and I were on a hike, we stumbled onto this cow carcass. I let out a squeal when we found it.

Later that evening, Darryl Zitting and Ryan Rosenberg's families came out to join us. And the bugs found us. We broke out the guitar and roasted s'mores.

I knew that sleeping was going to be cold, so I brought an extra blanket for everyone. Somehow only six got in. Merril sleeps colder than I do, so I let him have the extra blanket. I was almost warm enough, but not quite. All the extra blankets had been stuffed in large pillowcases, and I used those. I ended up putting my feet in a king size pillowcase and using the other pillowcase around my hips. It made it just the right temperature and I was able to finally sleep.

The next morning we drove on a dirt road for about an hour until we got to wire pass trailhead. We were meeting Callahan Williams and some other people and the Rosenbergs and the Zittings came with us. The wire pass trailhead gets to buckskin gulch. Buckskin Gulch is a slot canyon, it reminds me of Antelope Canyon. We stopped here for lunch.

Merril brought a ladder that he made for Japanese tours to make getting down the crux of the slot Canyon easier. We hiked to an elephant looking rock formation. And there was a hole up the side of the slot canyon and the older boys started to try to jump up into it. Jack was able to jump up into it while doing a 180 and flying through the air. Merril was able to get up into it too. We had to boost everybody else.

We hiked back and Merril cleaned up the ladder. After he cleaned it up a group of hikers came to where the ladder was and one of them said, "Where the *bleep* is the ladder?!" Merril stuck his head over the top and said something like the ladder was his and he was taking it with us. Sorry! I said we should have left a sign by the ladder that said the ladder was temporary and people were welcome to use it but it might not be there when they get back.  😄

After that we drove back to camp, hot and sweaty from hiking. We packed up camp and drove home. I received several bug bites along with Juliet. Everybody else had a couple that itched but I think we got the most. I'll have to remember bug spray next time! It was a great weekend with lots of cool adventures!

Senior Sunrise!

Utah recently moved from red to orange to yellow risk levels for COVID-19. Now that we are at a yellow risk level, we are able to start doing things again. Maxine and her friends got together to organize their own senior sunrise. The kids stayed out all night by Jem trail and saw the sunrise in the morning. I didn't stay out with them but offered to bring breakfast the next morning as the sun rose. I can't believe Maxine and Ellen were able to stay up all night long but they made it!

We are all anticipating a more normal school year starting in the fall. Hopefully her senior year will have some normalcy.

Summer is here!

Summer is finally here! teachers have stopped remote learning, even though school doesn't officially end until May 21st. We are ready to have a regular feeling summer instead of crazy, Corona remote learning. The kids wanted to start the summer with a night on the trampoline!

Some hair dying ensued. Juliet got this crazy idea to clean a mango pit, shampooed and conditioned it, and then dyed it. We have some leftover hair dye from a few years ago. Mikayla wanted her hair dyed too.

Summer, we are glad you're finally here!

Childhood...

I feel like this picture exhibits everything about childhood. Running around in your pajamas and playing in the dryer!

Fishies!

We decided to have a pet again. Merril and I aren't that keen on pets (because they're messy and generally a pain), but fish we're okay. We bought a 10-gallon tank from Walmart and went to Petco to buy some fish. We ended up getting different varieties of tetra and came home and set up the tank. We all like to watch the fishies, the girls ended up making some  popcorn to watch the fish.

We have a pink tetra named Sakana, two black striped tetras named Oscar and Tiger, and two white tetras called Angel and Johnny O. Bagel.

The guy at Petco would not sell me goldfish, saying that one goldfish needs a 15-gallon tank and they get really big and can live for 20 years. We had to buy a heater for the tetra, which I was a little irked about, but I think the tetra will be better in the long run. When they eat they kind of dart like piranhas. I hope we don't kill them! The Petco guy didn't seem very confident in my pet parenting skills.

River adventures!

I've wanted to go down the Virgin river in tubes for a long time! We got enough for the whole family and started just below River Rock Cafe in La Verkin. It was colder and rockier than I thought it would be. I had ideas of gently floating down the river but that's not how it is. Mark flopped out of his tube and bumped into a boulder almost immediately. The whole idea made Maxine anxious and she wasn't really having it. After a mile, Merril said he'd hike out with Max and Mark at Cactus Cliffs and meet us at Grandpa's Pond. I took his phone and kept going with Jack, Juliet, and Mikayla.

If you could stay dry, it wasn't too bad. We had to flatten out over the rocks so we wouldn't bump our bums.

Jack tipped his tube and couldn't warm up. He was shivering pretty bad so we stopped on a warm sand bar.

We started too late, almost 4:00 in the afternoon and it was taking way longer than anticipated to float down.

I couldn't believe some of the coolest scenery in southern Utah is just hiding a few miles from my house!

I was freezing as the evening came on and told Merril we wouldn't make it to Grandpa's Pond. We were going to get out at Sky Mountain Golf Course. It still took longer than we thought but it was so incredibly cool!

I told Merril it was so cool, I'd do it again tomorrow! So we did! I felt bad that Merril had to bail early but was grateful that he let me have this adventure with the kids.

So the next day, Saturday, Merril borrowed a Search and Rescue kayak and we started earlier, around noon. Mark decided to tag along. He was a little skittish at first but then had fun. We stopped at this sandy bar for a minute because Mark wanted to.

We started out again and were having fun until we flipped the kayak.

We stopped on another sand bar to warm up and calm Mark down.

He was skittish again and didn't want to keep going but there was no way out but through! He rallied and we kept going.

The first day we floated 6 miles in 3 hours on tubes and the second day we kayaked 9 miles in 2 1/2 hours. I wrenched my ankle one time when I stepped out on the wrong side of the kayak and my foot got stuck between a rock and the kayak. The water was pushing the kayak against my leg and it took some strength to get the kayak off me enough to free my leg.

Maxine met us at Grandpa's Pond and we got out and headed home.

After 2 days of playing in the river, I was a little beat up. It was the neatest thing I've done all year!

Mustache party for Evan

Since regular birthday parties are a thing of the past because of Rona, Evan our cousin was having a birthday and we zoomed into the call.

It was mustache themed and we sang him happy birthday like this.

It makes me feel like a black and white movie french villain. 😁
